The exhibition “Female Frames” focuses on the female perspective on graffiti and thus gives female sprayers more visibility. Although the relevance of the art form has been highlighted by a large number of publications in recent decades, gender-coded gaps remain in the discourse. As a result, the work of female actors has long been in the shadow of major debates, which raises the question of which identities are actually represented - and which are excluded.

With the group exhibition “Female Frames” the OZM Gallery counters these historical empty spaces. The works of pioneers of the first generation as well as young talents who represent an emancipation in the history of graffiti are exhibited. With work from Emesa Amze, Anna T-Iron, La Rue, Rafi the First (Stick up Girlz), Dizy (Stick up Girlz), Jennifer Kauka, Lady Wave (AFC), MickLaRock (AFC), Fany (AFC), Ream (AFC), Fluff (AFC), Shiva (AFC).

The artists represented in the exhibition each use very different painting styles and techniques as well as materials to express themselves visually. Some of the works are also created directly at the exhibition location, which means that site-specific attributes emerge in the works.

Marija Silvija Ambrazeviciute, known by her stage name Emesa Amze, was born in Lithuania, shaped the streets of London as a child and later explored the Black Forest landscapes as a teenager.

Each of her works of art reveals her ability to discover and celebrate beauty and positivity in a wide variety of environments. Her works are a reflection of her personal journey, conveying strength and resilience. What is particularly impressive is the depiction of women in her artwork, who exude self-confidence and pride and make a significant contribution to the diverse mosaic of urban art.

Rafi the first

Rafi the First, a pioneer of graffiti from Porto, combined architecture and art to enrich the streets of Lisbon and Porto with her works. After gaining national recognition, she opened the first graffiti shop in Porto in 2011 and joined the international graffiti crew Stick Up Girlz in 2015. Her artistic journey led her to projects that support women's rights and community art in Cape Verde. Her works, which ask questions about the abstraction of letters, reflect the harmony of the whole and transform pain into meaning. She received the Medal of Merit from the city of Porto in 2023 for her contributions to art.

Anna T Iron

Anna T-Iron is a Hamburg-based multidisciplinary artist specializing in handwritten typography, graphic design, sign painting and illustration. Anna's work is driven by craftsmanship, dynamism, colors, fruits and fun - as well as her desire for tropical plants and retro-futuristic vibes. Anna travels extensively and paints colorful murals dominated by handwritten typographic styles combined with illustrations, bold patterns and textures. With 15 years of hands-on experience in graffiti painting, Anna is ready for new walls, bridges, shops, windows and more. She is incredibly thirsty for new challenges, learning and sharing skills and adventures, and is always looking for the next goal to achieve. She always wants to connect with people and share her skills and knowledge with the world.

La Rue

Alejandra Caicedo, also known as La Rue, is a multidisciplinary artist from Cali, Colombia whose work pushes the boundaries of traditional art. In her works, which are characterized by pastel tones and a bright color palette, she creates alternative universes that interweave the idyllic with the dystopian and focus on nature and female figures. Her art embraces the earthly and reflects the human experience with all its beauties and contradictions. Since her arrival in Hamburg, shortly before the global pandemic, her work has experienced a paradigm shift, influenced by her experiences as an Afro-Latin American woman in Europe, and is increasingly becoming a means of catharsis and reflection of migratory grief.

Shiva (AFC) From squares to graffiti Anuschka Heilig aka Shiva moved from classic graffiti to the world of geometries and symmetries early on. The square is considered a symbol of strength and stability. Straight edges and right angles give the figure static and balance. Geometric shapes and hatching derived from the proportions of the square transforms them into letters and ultimately into an image.

Dizy

One of India's first female graffiti artists, Dizy has made a name for herself in the male-dominated graffiti world. She began her artistic career with breakdancing and discovered graffiti, which was still unusual in India at the time. Despite a lack of role models and support in the early days, as well as the challenge of finding suitable materials, Dizy passionately pursued her path. She participated in a German-Indian hip-hop program run by Zebster, which helped her connect with German artists and expand her skills. Through Skype lessons with New York graffiti teacher King Slone, she developed her style, which was initially influenced by old-school New York graffiti. Dizy eventually traveled to Germany to further develop her art and has since commuted between Berlin and Delhi and now Hamburg. Her experiences and her courage to break stereotypes make her a source of inspiration for other artists.

Jennifer Kauka

Jennifer Kauka was part of the core of the emerging hip-hop scene/graffiti culture in Hamburg in the 80s. While the others were spraying and breaking, she started taking photos and capturing everything on camera.

Many of her photos are published in the book A CITY BECOMES COLORFUL and can also be seen in the internationally renowned exhibition of the same name in the Museum of Hamburg History.

Jennifer Kauka's pictures allow you to experience the captured moments in a new way and offer a unique insight into the time. They are a valuable testimony to the scene.

Mike La Rock

Mick La Rock, born Aileen Middel in Groningen in 1970, is one of the first and best-known European graffiti artists. Inspired by the traditional New York graffiti style, she began painting in 1983 under the name MICKEY and gained recognition in the Netherlands and later internationally in the 80s.

Her career took a decisive turn when she met established graffiti artists such as Quik, Blade, Lady Pink, Iz The Wiz, Sar, Dondi, Futura and Lee Quiñones at the 1992 exhibition “Coming from The Subway” at the Groninger Museum. These encounters led her to New York, where she became part of the local graffiti scene and worked on large mural projects.

After mastering the art of graffiti, Mick La Rock sought new challenges and began exploring letter abstraction. Her minimalist works, both two and three dimensional, show influences from mid-20th century brutalist architecture and early 20th century abstract art.

Mick La Rock completed her studies at the Hanzehogeschool Groningen and attended courses at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy for Fine Arts in Amsterdam. She is a member of the City Curatorial of the Municipality of Amsterdam and was guest curator for the exhibition “Graffiti. New York meets The Dam” in the Amsterdam Museum.

Her work has been featured in various graffiti documentaries and retrospective graffiti books. She is a member of several graffiti crews including The Fantastic Partners, The Master Blasters, Clowns From Hell, Always Out Dancing and All Female Crew.

AFC – ALL FEMALE CREW

In 1996, a few girls in Hamburg-Altona grabbed a marker and a can - and haven't put them down since. On their journey they met more and more inspiring women and the crew continued to grow. They landed on Jupiter in 2023. No other female crew in the world can look back on a longer history in the game than AFC.

Venus (AFC)

Venus has embodied the visionary power of the OZM Gallery. Her interdisciplinary works consciously break boundaries, both in art and in society. Her work “No Limits” pays homage to the transcendence of graffiti by not only crossing traditional boundaries and removing the limitations of gender roles. Venus' Creating means resistance to preconceived norms and offers a space in which identity and expression can develop beyond restrictions.

Bona_Berlin

Bona_Berlin is a street artist. She is known for her colorful faces, which are always made up of different colors and shapes. The bizarre minds are at home on the streets of the world. It all started on small pieces of paper in Berlin, and the paste-ups have now become murals that can be found in many countries on different continents. Bona_Berlin's faces are individual and diverse, like each and every one of us. Only when taken together do they form a larger whole. The artist has had several solo exhibitions in recent years, is committed to humanitarian issues and justice and is an integral part of various urban art festivals worldwide. Bona_Berlin is also repeatedly involved in social activities, for example in cooperation with Viva con Agua, Seebrücke or Hanseatic Help. In 2020, Bona_Berlin won the audience award in the “Intervention” category at the Streetart-of-the-year Award. The anamorphic installation “The Face” was created in collaboration with the Pfund & Dollar gallery and shows that we are all more than what first appearances suggest.
